TRX Suspension Training

What is Suspension Training?

Suspension Training is a unique training modality that uses our own body weight and gravity as resistance.  Contrary to the rings in gymnastics, TRX Suspension Training has one anchor point and is ground based; therefore we are able to recreate athletic movements freely.  The simplicity of the TRX allows us to transition fluidly from exercise to exercise and work endurance, strength, power, balance, coordination, core, and flexibility in one piece of equipment

What is Functional Training?

The body knows movements, not individual muscles.  If we sit down on a machine to train, we typically isolate one muscle.  Functional Training means we recruit and integrate groups of muscles, which is how we move in life and sport.  In order to effectively train for sport, we must train entire movements by engaging the core and stabilizing musculature of our bodies—this is how we generate power in the pool or on the pitching mound!

Why should we use the TRX?

The TRX is the most effective, comprehensive piece of training equipment I’ve encountered in all my years as an athlete and coach.  The TRX is extremely efficient because we can get a total-body ALL CORE workout in as few as 15-20 minutes.  TRX Suspension Training engages the core in each exercise and requires postural stabilization, thereby reinforcing the body alignment essential in swimming, other sports, and everyday life!  See the Swimming Instruction page for swim-specific TRX training and the Fitness Training page for all other training options.

Where can we use it?

It is very portable and weighs less than 2 lbs, so we retain the ability to workout while traveling and not miss out on crucial training time.  At $150, the TRX is very cost effective for individuals and club programs that don’t have the space or budget for large, bulky machines.  It is easily anchored over pull-up bars, monkey bars, around a tree, over a door, or on a squat rack, just to name a few.

Is it useful for all sports?

The TRX allows us to mimic sport-specific movements fluidly and freely without a cumbersome machine limiting range of motion.  Athletes need to train entire movements, not just one or two muscles at a time.  The TRX integrates multiple muscle groups in each exercise, thereby reducing risk of injury from overuse and isolation of one muscle.  This is the epitome of functional training.

Is the TRX only appropriate for advanced athletes?

No!  ANYONE at ANY LEVEL can train on the TRX.  Since our own body weight and the forces of gravity create our resistance, the intensity of a workout is easily adjustable by changing the angle of the body relative to the TRX.  Therefore, the TRX is extremely appropriate for all ages and abilities. I encourage you to explore the hundreds of exercises you can do on the TRX.

How do I know which exercises are appropriate for my training?

Contact Kari Woodall if you would like an individual or team training program designed.  Additionally, there are numerous DVD’s that the Head Trainers and Program Directors at Fitness Anywhere, Inc. (makers of the TRX) have put together for purchase for all sports and users.  Each DVD gives appropriate progressions and regressions of the exercises to easily adjust intensity.  I recommend the Core Strength DVD, the Military Workout DVD, the Team Sports DVD and the All Body Express DVD which comes with the purchase of a TRX Professional.
